German shepherd also known as an Alsatian is a large sized breed dog weighing 30-40 kg (66-88 lb) and 22-32 kg (49-71lb) in males and females. Similarly, their standard height is 60-65 cm (24-26 in) and 55-60 cm (22-24 in) for males and females. They have medium sized brown eyes with an enthusiastic, canny and confident look. Those German shepherd have black nose with domed forehead. Moreover, they have long neck which is raised when delighted. Likewise, they have strong jaws and their ears are large and stand erect which falls back while moving. Furthermore, they have bushy tail reaching to the hock. Most common color of German shepherd is tan/black and red/black and they have double coat in which outer layer sheds throughout the entire year.

German shepherd is the second popular dog breed after the Labrador retriever in the United States. German shepherd that is originated from Germany is a very intelligent, obedient, faithful and fearless dog. They would fight back when provoked. These dogs respond well to training and because of unexceptionable intelligence and unfailing loyalty, they are currently known as world’s top police and military guard dog breed. Generally, German shepherd is an aloof in nature. They can be extremely affectionate with the one they love and care and in contrary aggressive with the strangers. Well trained German shepherd is calm with the strangers however they don’t want someone unfamiliar to enter into their territory. Mostly they are of protective nature when it comes to their family and home and won’t hesitate to protect them if in danger. In addition to it, they are energetic dogs needing a lot of exercise. However, lack of training and exercise could lead them to respond wildly and be destructive of the property. Moreover, they are a curious dog who loves exploring their surroundings. Despite, German shepherd undergo from different medical conditions but commonly they suffer from hip dysplasia which is often resulted from poor breeding. Nevertheless, they are also known as German shedder because they shed throughout the year. So they should be brushed several times a week.

German Shepherd Feeding
German Shepherd should be fed 3 to 4 mugs of dry food daily that should be divided into two meals. The amount of food that German Shepherd needs depend on his size, age, digestion system and action level. For instance, active dogs like German Shepherd needs to be fed more in comparison to small breed dogs. So it is really important to provide quality food to dogs. If they are thin then they should be fed more however if they are gaining weight then the amount of food they are taking should be cut off. Their weight can be figured out by hands-on test. Simply, one can put hands on him, thumbs along the spine and fingers down the side. After that one will be able to feel his ribs underneath the layer of muscle. If the ribs is seen then they are too thin but if the ribs is invisible then they should go on a diet. German Shepherd puppy should be given extra care with feeding and exercising. Mostly they grow at a fast pace that is between the four and seven months which leads in the disorder of the bone. Therefore, they should be fed high quality low-calorie diet food that will stop them from growing too rapidly. Moreover, the puppies should be prohibited to play on a hard surface before the age of two years because their joints are not fully developed at that time. However playing on grass is okay for them. Nonetheless, they should not be over fed and daily exercise is a must for a German Shepherd.
